About this Event
We are in a grave climate crisis, caused primarily by the emission of carbon dioxide from human activities. One of the most basic human requirements is the need to heat our homes and one of the most significant steps anyone can take to reduce carbon dioxide emissions is to stop burning gas for heating, and to install a domestic heat pump.
In this talk Michael de Podesta will explain functionally how heat pumps work, and how heat pumps work in real homes, using stories from local people who have installed heat pumps.
Please come along with questions!
Pre-talk exercise: Wait for some cold weather, ideally with temperatures at or below 0 °C all day. Make sure your house is just how you like it, and leave the temperature unchanged all day. Read your gas meter at midday on consecutive days and record the number in kWh used each day. This data will give you an estimate of the maximum heating power your home requires.
About the speaker:
Before his retirement in 2020, Michael de Podesta was a Principal Research Scientist at the National Physical Laboratory, and a specialist in the measurement of temperature. He has been speaking to the public about Climate Change since 2004. Since his retirement he has devoted his time to first measuring, and then reducing, carbon dioxide emissions from his home. Since 2020, his household carbon dioxide emissions have fallen by more than 80% with no loss of quality of life. He writes a blog at http://protonsforbreakfast.org .
