About this Event
In this concert, the Aeolian Singers celebrate the gifted 19th century writer E. Pauline Johnson (Mohawk name Tekahionwake), a central figure in the literary history of Indigenous women in Canada. Our season guest artist Zoe Strutt will be featured on the marimba.
Johnson was notable for her poems, short stories, and performances that celebrated her mixed-race heritage. Her texts have been captured in music in two contrasting song cycles for treble choir - Tim Corlis’s “Heart Songs of the White Wampum” and Don MacDonald’s passionate cycle “Fire-Flowers”. The composers use settings that that give us a window into Johnson’s life, including her struggle with breast cancer. The music beautifully conveys Johnson’s love of nature, both in their joy and playfulness and in the sincere way they express feelings of compassion and tenderness.

About the Aeolian Singers
"Give in to the story, get lost in the sound"
The Aeolian Singers have been part of the fabric of Nova Scotia’s choral community since 1976. With a focus on storytelling and building community, the choir seeks to find a balance between sharing music that is accessible and familiar, and performing works that will challenge both their singers and audience to discover something new, gain perspective or grow in understanding.
