Developing skills to support voice hearers or those with alternative realities 1:1 in prisons, forensic units and IRCs.
About this Event

10:30am - 3:30pm, Monday 20th September

10:30am - 3:30pm, Wednesday 29th of September

According to the MoJ (2013), 25% of women and 15% of men in Pr*son report symptoms indicative of 'psychosis' (including distress around hearing voices, seeing things or beliefs). In forensic units and services, this percentage is likely to be much higher.

The current circumstances mean that many services are needing to adapt to support people in different ways, with a need for skilled one-to-one work around such experiences.

This FREE 2 day ONLINE training course is for those who have attended Hearing Voices training with us before.

If you have not attended Hearing Voices training with us before and would like to attend this training, please do sign up for this event AND follow this link to sign up for the 'Hearing Voices and Alternative Realities - Intro to 1:1 Support' on the 15th September: https://hearingvoicesandalternativerealities11supportintro.eventbrite.co.uk

This training is open to people nationwide working in prisons, forensic units and immigration removal centres, or those who work primarily with ex-detainees.

‘Having attended many courses in my work since qualifying in 2002 I would like to say it was one of the best courses I have attended and a great opportunity for exploration and learning.’

(Trainee from 3-day facilitation training)

ABOUT THE COURSE

This course is two full days of training:

10:30am - 3:30pm, Monday 20th September

10:30am - 3:30pm, Wednesday 29th of September

If you are new to the Hearing Voices ethos, please book and attend this training, and follow this link to book your place on the preceding half-day training on the 15th September: https://hearingvoicesandalternativerealities11supportintro.eventbrite.co.uk

All sessions are online (via Zoom), are grounded in lived experience and in our work supporting people in different secure settings. We use powerpoint slides, practical activities such as role play and reflective discussions to cater to a variety of learning styles in an online format.

Should you wish to attend it, the preceding half-day introdution to the ethos will cover:

  • Diverse experiences and understandings of voices, visions, alternative realities and 'psychosis' in secure forensic settings
  • Coping strategies and pathways to recovery
  • Power and empowerment within secure settings

This two day training will cover:

  • Reflections on the differences between one-to-one support and a Hearing Voices Group
  • Maintaining the Hearing Voices ethos when there's only two of you. Is it different to therapy?
  • How do we keep things feeling safe and apply a 'trauma-informed' approach?
  • Problem solving common difficulties that arise
  • Reflecting on our own positioning within this one-to-one relationship

ELIGIBILITY

The course is open only to those working in prisons, IRCs, forensic units or primarily with ex-detainees.

About Hearing Voices Groups:
Hearing Voices groups are safe spaces for people who hear, see, and sense things other people don’t; and for people who experience multiplicity, paranoia, unusual beliefs or alternative realities. Our ethos is to validate experiences, and to support people to find meaning of them using their own frame of reference.
About Voices Unlocked:
The original project was established in 2010 with the aim of establishing a network of Hearing Voices groups in prisons and forensic secure units across London. This network, the first of its kind in the world, now includes groups in Immigration Removal Centres, groups for women, and has expanded out of Greater London and the Home Counties, to the Midlands, the North-East and Manchester.
