After decades of research involving ticks and different forested habitats, we have concluded that forests in poor health, in general, have the highest tick abundances and largest risk to the public. This talk will discuss what makes a forest unhealthy, will show tick abundances in different forested settings, and will provide a justification for proper forest management to benefit wildlife and the public alike.
Dr. Scott C. Williams graduated with his BA from Connecticut College, Master’s from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, and Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut. Scott is Chief Scientist and Head of the Department of Environmental Science and Forestry at The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station in New Haven. His research focuses on the negative impacts of white-tailed deer, invasive plant species, and blacklegged tick overabundances on the health of local ecosystems and the public alike.
