As part of our Healing through Art Series, the Ovissi Foundation invites you to an afternoon gathering in solidarity with art. We are grateful to Phaedra Askarinam in offering a performance art piece, “Healing with a Cup of Tea”, where you will be invited to connect over a cup of tea. The tea bag will be transformed into an installation offering space for conversations transforming our internal journey during this intense time in Iran.

“Silenced Screams”is curated as a collaboration of the Exhibit9 artists group: Roya A., Sarah Barzmehri, Parisa Faghih, Rosa Fakhrai, Mitra Mortazavi Lore, Sohayla and Guita Vafai. This body of work speaks to the lived journey of four generations of Iranian women, tracing their struggles for personal liberty and freedom of expression across time.

Phaedra Askarinam is a Jewish Iranian American artist, activist, and educator whose multidisciplinary practice operates at the intersection of culture, memory, and human rights. Drawing from her lived experience growing up in Tehran and later immigrating to the United States, Askarinam employs materials, performance, and participatory gestures to explore themes of displacement, mourning, healing, and women’s rights.

She holds a BFA in Fine Arts and Psychology from the University of Maryland and an MFA from American University. Her work has been exhibited at the Katzen Arts Center Museum at American University, The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Arts Center, Maze Gallery, and Sarah Silberman Art Gallery. She is a recipient of the Babs Van Swearingen Memorial Award and the Vital Signs Grant from the Clarice Performing Arts Center. Askarinam teaches at Montgomery College and American University and lives in Bethesda, Maryland.
