About this Event

NAMI Glendale invites you to get creative at this arts and mental health event, Healing through Storytelling. on Saturday, June 17 at 11:00AM at the Edendale Public Library in Echo Park.

Artist and Clinical Social Worker, Melissa Hernandez, will guide participants in the art of storytelling and listening while establishing a safe environment for people to be vulnerable.

Each individual will be guided to tell the group a story about an object that carries meaning for them. Everyone will come away with deeper significance to their life journey of wellness, recovery, and self-care practice.

WHY STORYTELLING ?

Storytelling is a vital tool in building and maintaining genuine connections. Storytelling enables one to recognize and reconcile where they stand in the present by taking inventory of where they have been in the past. Through past reflection, workshop participants are guided on how to move forward in the future. In piecing together our stories, we find our humanity and interconnectedness with others.

WHAT TO EXPECT ??

This workshop is an opportunity to connect with people, in a simple, small way. Participants practice their listening skills, genuinely listening. Like when we were kids, we were making art, making friends - those simple things in life that are so healing to us.

WHAT TO BRING ?

Bring an item of personal importance related to healing and self-care related to a larger theme.

WHO IS THIS FOR ?

All are welcome, various age groups and people at all levels of creative practice. It enriches the experience to hear a mix of people. Melissa has led this workshop several times in the past with various audiences, including with community health workers, adults and youth.
