The Headstones for Heroes Ball will raise funds to purchase grave markers for the unmarked graves of Confederate veterans. While the Department of Veterans Affairs provides headstones for veterans, some soldiers are ineligible for the program and their stones must be purchased by private benefactors. The Gen. States Rights Gist Camp #1451, Sons of Confederate Veterans, of West Springs, Union County, SC is sponsoring the Headstones for Heroes Ball to raise funds for its mission of marking the graves of Confederate veterans from Union County.This charity ball is a social event for the Third Brigade of the SC Division of the SCV, whose members may attend at a reduced ticket price. The ball is also open to nonmembers of the SCV and the general public.
The Headstones for Heroes Ball will be held on Saturday, November 9th at Spartanburg's American Legion Post 28 in Duncan Park. This historic venue lends authenticity to our recreation of a mid-nineteenth century charity ball. Live dance music by the Picken Pearls of Columbia, SC and experienced dance callers will allow guests to enjoy the social graces of an earlier period. The dancing is simple and can be quickly learned even by beginners.
Attire for the Headstones for Heroes Ball is either mid-nineteenth century military or civilian, or modern semiformal or formal. Please do not wear heel plates on your footwear which would damage the wooden dance floor. Ladies and gentlemen are reminded that gloves were always worn when dancing to prevent the soiling of the fine silk gowns and wool suits; additional gloves for loan will be available if you have forgotten to bring your own.
The hall will open at 7:30 pm and music will begin at 8:00 pm. Desserts and refreshments will be served during a break in the music and dancing. The ball will end at 11:00 pm.
Tickets for the ball are $40.00 per person for the general public, and $30.00 for members of the Third Brigade of the SCV. Capacity of the hall is 100 and no tickets will be sold at the door. You will not receive a ticket in the mail but will be put on the guest list checked at the door.
If you would like to support our effort to purchase headstones but cannot attend the Ball, we welcome your donation. Each headstone costs $375.00 and we would be grateful for any portion thereof.
