About Michelle Payne OAM : Michelle captured the hearts of a nation with her historic win at the 2015 Melbourne Cup, becoming the first and only female jockey in 165 years to conquer the event : and on the 100 to 1 outsider, Prince of Penzance. Her victory not only propelled her into stardom ,including the making of a hugely successful movie of her life, Ride Like a Girl ,but also sparked conversations around the globe about perseverance and gender equality in sports.
Growing up in a family deeply rooted in racing, Michelle’s journey to the top was filled with both triumphs and formidable challenges. From surviving a near-fatal fall at 18 to her awe-inspiring return to racing after multiple injuries, Michelle's resilience and determination exemplify the spirit of International Women's Day.
Michelle's accolades include the prestigious Don Award for Most Inspirational Australian Athlete, The International Longines Award presented in Washington for Women in Horse Racing , Sportswoman of the Year at the Cosmopolitan Magazine Awards, and the Women of Style: Sport Award from InStyle Magazine. In 2021 her win ,from a shortlist of 20, was recognised by The Australian Hall of Fame as the most significant moment in Sport over the past 60 years
In 2022, she was honoured with the Order of Australia medal for her services to horse racing.
