Hays Woods Ranger Guided Hike- History Interested in exploring Pittsburghs newest park, but unsure where to start? Come join your City Park Rangers on these introductory hikes!
About this Event

Hays Woods is the city of Pittsburghs newest park, and its second largest at 626 acres. It is the largest new urban park project undertaken east of the Mississippi in 75 years. The park consists mostly of an undeveloped interior woodland where wildlife thrives. The deep glens formed by the 12 streams running throughout the park provide moist lush habitat for unique plants, birds and amphibians. There are four seperate overlooks above the Mongahela. It is a popular spot for birding and wildlife viewing, and a great low traffic place to hike off the beaten path but still within city limits.

Historically this property has been used for logging, mining, farming, and as an unnoficial recreational space for the past 50 years. In the early 2000's the Friends of Hays Woods formed to advocate for the forest and prevent the development of a racetrack and casino on this uniquely forested property. It was made a city park in 2023.

Hikes will average around 2 miles long, and last about an hour. The pace will be slow so we have plently of time to stop and and admire the various plants and animals there, as well as the overlook views!
