About this Event
Built in 1884 as part of the orphanage and workhouse and was used to house the most disruptive children, criminals and the mentally insane. There are tales of residents having been thrown down stairs, locked in punishment rooms/cupboard and being subject to physical and sexual abuse in various rooms of the building. During WWI, the building was used by the hospital as a military hospital for wounded soldiers to come back to Sunderland to recover from their wounds, or to sadly pass away. Later used as a home for unmarried mothers and teenage girls
There are reports of shadowy figures being seen in the corridors, doors banging when no one else is in the building, a mysterious stain at the foot of the stairs that would return after deep cleaning the carpet, voices asking to be set free, the lift opening and closing on its own. Some people have felt like they are being restrained, others feel like they have been pushed and one person felt someone grab at their throat. A recent investigation at the centre had someone feel like their chest was tight and they struggled to breathe in one room, which eased as soon as they stepped back out. Other sensitives have felt like they have been watched/followed around the building.
