About this Class

This class is for the beginner cookie decorator, for the person who is just curious about what royal icing cookie decorating is all about, no experience necessary! If you have limited experience with decorating sugar cookies, found yourself frustrated with royal icing, or if you are trying to have fun with family or friends, this is the class for you! We will be doing a fun Halloween theme set of cookies that taste amazing and will look even better once you’ve completed your decorating!

We provide everything you will need from cookies, icing, sprinkles, and a box to take your awesome creations home in - we just need YOU! Each student gets 6 cookies, 4 icing colors, sprinkles, and royal icing transfers when applicable to the cookie set (you’ll learn about these in class). And you'll get a few other goodies to take with ya!

We’ll provide all the tools necessary for you to knock this cookie class out of the park! Everything is prepped right before class – so no baking or icing mixing is required. Just decorate!

This class is on October 22nd and starts at 5:30 PM until 7:30 PM sharp so we can have enough time to decorate and answer questions along the way. Come by yourself, bring your best friend, or bring the family - we have seating for up to 12 people! It's a blast whether you're coming with a friend, family member, or solo!

This class is good for ages 12+ (kids under 12 are welcome when accompanied by a parent, but if you'd like to leave the kiddos at home, purchase a DIY add-on kit (more on that below)! The take-home kits are great for doing at home with the kids – or just as a second try to expand your learning, plus –when you purchase a kit, I will provide a step-by-step pictorial guide so you can follow along with the steps yourself!

🚘 The class will be held at The Portland District Library, 334 Kent St, Portland, MI 48875.

Having the most fun ever! We will be going over some cookie facts, and decorating techniques and you will be decorating your very own set of cookies that you will take home with you that day!

Event Photos

Can I purchase an additional DIY kit to take home?

Yes! Many parents or practicing cookie decorators purchase additional class kits to take home and re-do the classes. You can purchase an add-on kit during check-out. Your kit will be available at the end of your class - so don't forget it!

Can I purchase an additional DIY kit if I'm not attending the class?

Yes! Check out on Eventbrite - set your class ticket to 0 and add as many DIY kits as you'd like to purchase. You'll pick them up before or after class - l will have them ready for you. It is as easy as grab-n-go!

Do I need to know how to bake?

Nope! No baking history is required. I will have the cookies pre-made for you along with the icing already mixed and colored. Have a little decorating experience under your belt… er… apron? Join us! I can help with questions on icing mixing, icing techniques and dough spread!

What will we learn in class?

You’ll learn what goes into preparing royal icing, the value of different icing consistencies – we’ll touch on tips and tricks to make your cookies look even better than they taste (and they taste good)! You’ll also learn different decorating techniques depending on the class theme such as marbling, outlining, wet-on-wet, brush embroidery, and painting. Or hey – go off script and make your own designs – it’s your class!

What do I need to bring?

Nothing but a smile! Everything will be provided for you including my (rather tasty) sugar cookies. All you need to do is join us and have fun! Messy decorator? You can bring your own apron or just wear easy-to-wash clothing. Oh – and bring your phone – I love photos!

What age is best for cookie classes?

Our classes are for almost any age! From youngsters to grandparents - come on in and have some cookie fun with us! Our in-person classes are great for any age; however, kiddos under 12 will need a parent to take the class as well. If you think your child may be too young to enjoy the in-person class, purchase an additional take-home kit! I will provide a step-by-step pictorial guide, and you can teach your kids in the comfort of your own home.

Can just my child take the class?

We ask that all parents also attend the classes with their children under 12. For children 12 and over, you can drop off your child to take the class and return to pick-up in 2 hours. Due to space restrictions, we do not have room for parents to stand by and watch their children in class. So unfortunately, your adorable kiddo under 12 cannot take the class alone. A parent must also purchase a ticket and take the class as well - but I promise you this - it's super fun for all involved!

What will I bring home?

By the end of the class, you will have created a set of 6 beautiful cookies ready to dry for 24 - 48 hours, in their own box. You'll also take home your leftover icings and your own beautiful hand-crafted one-of-a-kind silicone and stainless steel cookie scribe.

I’ll also send you an email after class with the recipes for the icing and cookies that we used in class so that you can recreate these cookies at home. And of course, you’ll have new skills, memories, and fun!

Can I sign up as an individual or as a group?

You can sign up either as an individual, with a friend, or with a whole group. The more the merrier! We are limited to a total of 12 seats per class, so definitely sign up ASAP!

Where are the classes located?

This class will be held at The Portland District Library, 334 Kent St, Portland, MI 48875.

I signed up for a class but can't make it?

:( We understand that life happens so that’s why we allow you to cancel up to 7 days before the class. You can always transfer your spot to a friend though (and what a nice friend you are). Any cancelation after 7 days prior to the class, will result in a class credit redeemable for up to 1 year from the credit issue date. Please read below for our COVID-19 and cancellation policies. No-shows don't get refunds or credits - so try to make it, or send someone else instead!

Things to Bring

Wondering what you need to bring to have a successful time decorating? All you need to bring is yourself – nothing’s required – and I'll take care of the rest! But here are some things that I'd recommend if you’d like to elevate your experience!

• Bring an apron! Things can get messy when you’re workin’ with royal icing – so if you'd like, grab an apron (bonus points if it’s cute – I’ll definitely be asking where you got it).

• Bring your glasses! There’s a lot to see, and many small details as well as example photos of your cookies! You don’t want to miss out on anything.

• Bring your phone! I love it when students take pictures throughout class – so bring a phone!

• Bring a mask if you’d like! These classes follow the state health guidelines, but if you’d like to wear a mask throughout class – please do!

• Bring a good attitude! Cookies are fun, but they're also challenging! A good attitude makes all the difference.

About your Teacher Kelly from Loafing Goat Bakery

Who doesn’t love getting out and having fun while enjoying delicious cookies? Community, family, food, fun (and goats) – that’s why we started Loafing Goat Bakery! Our retired dairy goats are loafing around while we take the Loafing Goat Bakery booth to events. I began teaching cookie decorating classes after friends encouraged me to share my skills, and their enthusiastic support inspired me to keep offering classes! Cookie Classes by Kelly, owner of Loafing Goat Bakery, provide a fun and relaxing learning experience. My favorite part of teaching is helping others make wonderful memories with friends, family, and loved ones.

The classes I teach focus on the basics and cater to beginning cookie decorators or those just looking to have fun while learning a new skill. Whether you’re looking for a fun date, a girls-or-guys-night-out, or want to explore cookie decorating on your own – there’s a seat in class for you!

A little about me – I’ve been baking since I could stand on a chair in my Grandma’s kitchen, watching and helping make the annual Springerle cookies. I come from a long line of bakers and have been working in kitchens and practicing the art of sugar work and baking for as long as I can remember. I’ve had a piping bag in my hand for over 20 years. I’ve studied with pastry chefs in restaurant kitchens and taken various formal cake and cookie decorating classes, including making and designing sugar paste flowers and floral arrangements. I’ve practiced and studied all things baking, and I love what I do – who wouldn’t love it?

It’s the sweetest job in the world!

Ask me about the Old Red Mill Farmers Market! While my volunteer work for ORMFM is mostly behind the scenes, you might recognize me from the market, where we've been setting up our Bakery booth for 3 years and attending special events throughout the season. Help coordinate the farmers market, I also serve as the go-to person for Michigan Cottage Food Law questions. If you have any questions about the farmers market or cottage food law, consider me your resource – get in touch!

Oh yeah – I have classes throughout the year which highlight different themes so make sure to sign up for our newsletter so you can get in on the cookie action!

You Don't Show Up or Email Prior To Class:

• If I do not hear from you before your class’s start time, and you do not show up for class, I won’t be able to offer you a refund or a credit even if you're sick. So please reach out before class if you’re feeling sick!

Add a Sugar Cookie Class Kit to your Order!

• Order an additional sugar cookie class kit and take the class home with you! This is fun if you want to teach a child, a friend, practice more (or just eat them)! The class kits are a replica of the cookies, icing and sprinkles you used in class. They come with everything you'll need to recreate your set from class and I will even provide a pictorial guide of the steps we took in class, so you can follow my step-by-step instructions from home! Sugar Cookie Kits are created before your class and you'll pick them up and take them with you after class.

• How long can a kit last? Depending on how you store your kit, they can last for a week or longer. Freezing cookies and Icing will keep them fresh for a long time (months), but I recommend using your kit as soon as possible - ideally in the first week after you've taken it home. Cookies are heat-sealed for freshness – but again, use it in under a week to make sure it tastes the best. Freezing royal icing will also keep it fresh for a very long time, however, do use it as soon as possible. And note that royal icing is almost pure sugar and typically does not freeze hard, so don’t be alarmed if you take your bag out of the freezer and it’s still soft!

Each take-home class DIY kit includes:

✅ 6 Cookies

✅ 4 Icings

✅ Sprinkles (if required)

✅ Royal Icing Transfers(if required)

✅ Pictoral guide to complete the cookies just as we did in class!
