Hastkala (Handicrafts): The Art of Making, Building & Belonging for Children

Parivar Utsav Event No.4

A Family Immersion Series Celebrating India's Art, History, Culture and Mythology

This monthly series of experiential learning journeys in Delhi are meant to help families to come together with their children and take a deep-dive into India’s rich Historical and Cultural Heritage. A collaboration of Delhi’s leading heritage walking community for Young Learners @DelhiByFoot Scholarsafaris and @HeritageForChildren, bring forth unique hands-on walking tours/ workshops for young learners and their families.

This special walk is designed especially for children—to help them observe and understand how crafts are part of our everyday lives.

We begin by discovering indigenous architecture, where buildings are not just structures, but stories. Children learn about architecture as a form of handicraft shaped by hands, skills, and local materials. Through simple examples, they explore key elements of indigenous buildings—mud, stone, wood, bamboo—and understand how craftsmanship gives shape to spaces where people live, work, and celebrate.

Children are introduced to the idea of handicrafts—objects made by hand, with care, skill, and imagination. They learn how motifs, patterns, and colours are inspired by nature, festivals, beliefs, and daily life. The walk then shows how climate, traditions, and community life decide how homes, temples, and public spaces are built, and how these spaces, in turn, shape the way people live together.

Next, we step into the handicrafts section, where learning is more specific in terms of materials and colours looking at everyday objects of use. They move through different stalls, children discover region-specific crafts of India—from textiles and pottery to metalwork and woodcraft—understanding how each craft reflects the culture and geography of its region.

By the end of the walk, the children are able to relate handicrafts with climate, culture and geography. Children have a clear understanding of what is a handicraft and how an object of everyday use in its own specific context becomes a piece of art for the world to enjoy.

After the guided session, children and parents are free to explore the open market area, the Cottage Emporium, and Cafe Lota at their own pace—turning the day into a joyful journey through India’s rich diversity of craft, culture, and community.

✨ A walk that encourages children to observe, ask questions, appreciate handmade traditions, and connect creatively with India’s living heritage
