Harvests to Holidays: Fall and Winter Festivities in the 1820s and 1830s

‘Tis the season! On December 5 at 12 noon, join us for our First Friday of the Month series, where we feature a different theme related to the history of the Mount Vernon Hotel, which operated on our site between1826 and1833. This month, we have a festive introduction to the holiday season in the 1820s and 1830s to learn how bountiful harvests led to feasts and celebrations for the holidays. We will explore traditions in the 19th century for seasonal gatherings, including Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve/Day, and how people decorated, socialized, and dined. After this introduction, we will tour the period rooms of our day hotel, which served as a day resort for middle-class New Yorkers in the Manhattan countryside, and see how guests relaxed, socialized, and dined at this popular destination from 1826 to 1833.
