What better place for a steampunk picnic than a purpose-built Victorian pleasure gardens? Harrogate Valley Gardens contains seventeen acres of beautifully maintained Victorian Pleasure Gardens, there are original seating shelters, an art-deco pavilion, and a small tearoom/ice cream shop, along with woodland walks and the mineral spring pump house all set in the North Yorkshire Spa-Town of Harrogate. The plan is simple: we will meet at the entrance opposite the Royal Pump Room Museum (Cornwall Rd/Valley Dr), take a slow amble through the gardens, no doubt stopping for photos, then have our picnic on the lawns beyond the Sun Pavilion. For those who feel more energetic or are suitably attired there may be the opportunity for a round of crazy-golf after lunch. Parking is available for free on Valley Drive or on Cornwall Road but please note the sections closest to our meeting point have parking restrictions. Alternatively, there are pay and display car parks within the town itself. For anyone arriving by public transport, the bus and railways stations are a 10 to 15 minute walk from the meeting point.
In case of bad weather, we will instead meet at Hales Bar (just down the road from Valley Gardens) for food, drinks and conversation. Hales Bar is the last surviving gas-lit pub in England, and is well worth a visit.
