An evening of rare gems and bold voices from the tender, luminous opening of Gustav Mahler’s 'Blumine' to the sweeping power of Elfrida Andrée’s 'Symphony No. 2', this concert is all about discovery. Hear the double bass step into the spotlight in a striking concerto by Pietro Lusvardi, performed by the composer himself, revealing the instrument’s unexpected virtuosity, colour, and drama. Warm, poetic, daring, and deeply expressive—this is a programme that surprises, moves, and stays with you. 🎶

Gustav Mahler — Blumine: Originally composed in 1884 as part of incidental music for Der Trompeter von Säckingenand later included (and then removed) from his First Symphony. It opens the concert with tender simplicity—music of youthful warmth and poetic stillness, revealing the composer’s gift for heartfelt melody in its most transparent form.
Pietro Lusvardi — Double Bass Concerto: Performed by the composer himself, this is a compelling showcase for an instrument rarely heard in the spotlight. By turns expressive, virtuosic, and dramatic, the concerto explores the double bass’s full emotional and sonic range.
Pietro Lusvardi is a double bassist, composer, and educator who has composed and performed widely; this concerto blends virtuosic writing for the bass with inventive timbral effects — sometimes incorporating extended techniques like harmonics and percussive elements — showcasing the range and agility of the instrument.
Elfrida Andrée — Symphony No. 2 in A minor: Composed in October 1879, with the first performance in Gothenburg in April 1893. This is a a powerful and confident work by one of Scandinavia’s most remarkable musical pioneers. Sweeping, lyrical, and boldly structured, this symphony stands as a striking testament to Andrée’s symphonic voice and enduring originality.
