Programme:
Vaughan Williams – Folk Song Suite
Written in 1923 for military band (later arranged for orchestra), this lively suite weaves together English folk melodies that Vaughan Williams collected from the countryside. The three movements—March: Seventeen Come Sunday, Intermezzo: My Bonny Boy, and March: Folk Songs from Somerset—capture both rustic charm and rousing energy, celebrating England’s musical heritage.
Frederick Delius – On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring
One of Delius’s most loved miniatures, this gentle tone-poem paints an idyllic landscape. The orchestra imitates the call of the cuckoo amid serene, flowing textures, evoking the quiet joy of spring’s arrival. Norwegian folk melodies give the piece a wistful character, typical of Delius’s impressionistic style.
Peter Warlock – Capriol Suite
Composed in 1926, this suite reimagines Renaissance dance tunes from Thoinot Arbeau’s Orchesographie (1588). Warlock blends archaic melodies with modern harmonies, producing a set of six characterful dances that range from the stately Basse-Danse to the fiery Mattachins. It remains one of his most enduring works.
Joseph Haydn – Symphony No. 104 “London”
The last of Haydn’s symphonies, premiered in 1795 in London, crowns his symphonic output with wit, grandeur, and invention. The slow introduction gives way to a vigorous Allegro, followed by an elegant Andante, a rustic Minuet, and a finale brimming with energy. It epitomises Haydn’s mastery and his role as the “father of the symphony.”
