About this Event

West Atlanta Watershed Alliance (WAWA) is excited to share the scientific-knowledge base of Harriet Tubman and other enslaved people that navigated North American forests for survival and fugivity. As a finale to Black History Month and to kick off Women’s History Month, WAWA will host a guided hike on February 27 to spotlight Harriet Tubman’s experiences that gave her expertise in forested landscapes. We will also discuss nature-reliant techniques used by enslaved people, including some examples that can be observed in the old growth forest at the Outdoor Activity Center.

In collaboration with The Trust for Public Lands, we are hosting Harriet Hike as a finale to Black History Month and to kick off Women's History Month and the Atlanta Science Fest. The hike will infuse the scientific brilliance of black enslaved people and fugitives, public health benefits of walking in greenspaces (like the forest!), and acknowledge the wonders of the naturalist Harriet Arminta Tubman.
