The Sunday Afternoons at the Arts Center series will present the ever-popular Harpsichord Hour with Gregory Biss, on March 30 at 3 pm. The program will focus on Italian and German music from the 17th century and include discussion of the internal workings of the harpsichord.Biss was born in Illinois and educated chiefly in New England and Germany. His compositions have been performed by the Denver Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Vermeer Quartet, Miriam Fried, Trond Saeverud, Lynn Brubaker, Vinko Globokar and Harry Sparnaay. Several of his works may be heard on the CD: Selected Music 1969-2009, released in 2009. Biss has been making music in eastern Maine since 1975, with sidelines as a commercial diver and piano tuner, and has been closely involved with the Eastport Arts Center since its inception. One recent project has been revisions to his children’s opera, “You Can’t Sit Here,” first mounted at the Arts Center in March of 2024.
Sunday series programs are offered by donation, with no one turned away for lack of funds. Proceeds will be shared between the presenters and the EAC, committed to sustaining programs like these. The series will run through April. Updates and details may be found at eastportartscenter.org.
