Harmony's Brass Band werd in 2016 opgericht in Porto-Novo door Florentin Koudjou, trombonist van de band. Porto Novo is de tweede grootste stad van Benin en een havenstad aan de grens met Nigeria. De band bestaat uit een groep jonge en energieke muzikanten.
Brass bands zijn door de Europeanen geïntroduceerd en zijn al vanaf de 18e eeuw te vinden in de verschillende Afrikaanse landen. Ook townshipmuziek in Zuid-Afrika en de ‘rail bands’ in West-Afrika komen hier uit voort. De Malinese Super Rail Band was de eerste band die koperblazers, jazz uit New Orleans en Afro-Cubaanse ritmes combineerde met traditionele stijlen uit West-Afrika.
Het repertoire van Harmony's Brass Band wordt vooral beïnvloed door de traditionele muziek van Benin: de liederen en typische ritmes. Naast traditionele stukken spelen ze hun eigen originele composities. De muziek van Harmony’s Brass Band is een opzwepende, en feestelijke mix van
koperblazers en slagwerk, vol energie en pit. Na succesvolle concerten in Benin en andere West-Afrikaanse regio's speelt de
Harmony's Brass Band sinds 2021 op internationale festivals in Europa, waaronder Jazz à Vienne en dichter bij huis, Afrikafestival Hertme. En vanavond dus in De X.
Aansluitend is er nog een dansavond met Afrikaanse muziek door de X deejays.

Energetic power brass from Benin
Harmony’s Brass Band was founded in 2016 in Port Novo by Florentin Koudjou, the trombone player. Porto Novo is the second largest city in Benin and a port city at the border with Nigeria.
The band consists of a group of young and energetic musicians. Brass bands were introduced to Africa by the Europeans and have been found in different
countries since the 18th century. Township music in South Africa and the ‘rail bands’ in Western Africa also emerged from this. The Malian Super Rail Band was the first band to combine brass, New Orleans jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms with traditional styles from West Africa.
The repertoire of the Harmony’s Brass Band is mainly influenced by the traditional music from Benin: both songs and typical rhythms. In addition to traditional pieces they also play their own compositions. The music of Harmony’s Brass Band is an exciting and festive mix of brass and percussion, full of energy and power.
After successful concerts in Benin and other west African countries, Harmony’s Brass band has been playing international festivals in Europe since 2021, including Jazz a Vienne and, closer to home, Afrikafestival Hertme. And tonight in De X.
After the show the X deejays will take over and play their African music.
