Wisconsin folksinger and folklorist DAVID HB DRAKE presents the music of Great Lakes and saltwater sailors in “A Sailor’s Songbag”. He plays the music and tells stories of the seven seas and dockside pubs performing on guitar, concertina, and handmade banjo, dulcimer, and Native American flute. Program content is adjusted for appropriateness based on the age of the audience and the “port-of-call” of the concert.
David has been the resident musician for the Wisconsin’s flagship, the three masted schooner “Denis Sullivan” and has served as shantyman, interpreter, and performer aboard tall ships on the Atlantic, Pacific, and Great Lakes including the HMS Bounty, seen in the movie “Mutiny on the Bounty” (the ship lost in Hurricane Sandy), the environmental sloop “Clearwater” with Pete Seeger, the showboat “Rhododendron” on the Mississippi, the “Inland Seas”, “Earnestina”, and the “Maryland Dove”.
David has been a regular main stage performer for the Tall Ships Challenge on the Great Lakes in 2006, 2010, and 2013 performing at the festivals in Duluth MN, Green Bay WI, Chicago IL and Put-in-Bay OH. He is also a regular at smaller maritime events including Kenosha’s Days of Discovery, the Annapolis MD Maritime festival, and an annual fixture at the Chicago Maritime Festival presenting concerts and workshops.
DAVID HB DRAKE has appeared on Wisconsin and National Public Radio, public television, and in concert at festivals and stages throughout the Midwest. He has thirteen albums to his credit including his CD “A SCHOONER SONGBAG” featuring songs of the Denis Sullivan and “FISHERMAN’S BEACH”, his original songs from fresh waters
