Originally these ceiling mobiles were created as good luck charms that were hung from the ceiling in homes, usually over the dining table, to ensure a good crops and the fertility of fields. For centuries, himmelis stayed on display from Christmas till Midsummer in Finnish homes and they have been made primarily of rye straw and today that tradition continues in the Nordic countries with new materials also being used including paper, metal, plywood, plastic, and even with lights.
