About this Event
Join us on October 31st for Halloween as we host Joshua Rex who will be reading from his book, Haunted Victorian America, before he performs renditions of Edgar Allen Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" and "The Raven".
About the book:
“A poignant collection of weird and wonderful tales! Joshua masterfully marries history with darkness and with such poetic turns. Lyrical, intelligent, and surprising–this is beautifully crafted time travel with a collage of phantoms at the helm.” – L.E. DANIELS
“The descriptions here are incantatory, serving to bring about a sturdy illusion of what once was.” – TYLOR JAMES, author of Old Dark Houses
“. . . the bleak atmospherics of ‘The Caretaker’, the sinister undertones of ‘Immortelles’ and the lingering tragedy of ‘The Boarding House’ won my heart and soul. Speaking of soul, the author is definitely a wonderful, old soul. One that pours his heart and essence in each and every story. I urge you to just read one. You will know what I mean. It’s like he lived a thousand lives and now he is here to tell the stories.” – THE UNDEAD DAD READS
Ghosts walk here. Lonely women, devious daguerreotypists, penniless songwriters, phantom horses, privileged children, freedom seekers fleeing the hideous bonds of enslavement, dubious priests, immigrants heading West. They haunt prairies, steamships, the World’s Fair, frozen hinterlands, whaling ships, battlefields, and of course, houses . . .
Victorian America was a contested period of immense change. Industrialization, mechanization, technological breakthroughs, social and political upheavals, and an epic Civil War dominated the era, transforming both the landscape and the people of the United States forever, and setting the stage for the progressive 20th Century. These pages are populated by the ghosts of that age—the ones who walked then, and who may still walk among us today . . .
