The Hanson Street building was once owned by the huge tobacco company, WD & HO Wills. At its peak the company employed over 3,500 people and made over 260 million cigarettes per week. It was then taken over by Stephen Mitchell to produce cigars and in 1874 upon his death he bequeathed Β£70,000 to build one of the largest public libraries in Europe, The Mitchell Library.
Now the building is home to the Creative industries. There is a large stained glass department, ceramics studio, one of the few remaining paper making workshops in Scotland, framers, photographers, jewellers, sculptors, textiles, painters and printmakers.
In short, it is home to an immense amount of creative talent and for just a couple of days each year Hanson Street opens its doors to the public. You can wander the long corridors and enter the artistsβ studios to meet the artists and see artworks in progress, you can also chat to potters, glass and textile artists.
This year there will also be short workshops and demonstrations by a few of the artists in the main foyer running most of the Sunday.
There will also be a chance to win a sizeable monetary voucher that can be spent on workshops or art within Hanson Street at any time in the future.
This is a chance not to be missed, so why not pencil these dates into your diary and get a friendly welcome from a building that has seen many people through its doors over the years but this year you can fire your imagination and light up your creative energies!
