History of the area
Who were the Shield Cubs?
The old legends say that the Skjoldungen were descendants of the mythical King Skjold.
Once upon a time, there was war and strife in the land around Lejre. The people suffered and asked the god Odin for help. One early morning, a ship was under full sail entering Roskilde Fjord. The fishermen on the beach wondered, because they could not see a single person on board.
The ship sailed straight towards land in Lejre Vig, and when it slid onto the beach, people looked over the railing. Here they saw a little boy lying all alone on the deck. Around him were weapons and shields, and under his head was a sheaf. The people in the area were sure that the boy was Odin's son, so they lifted him up, put him on the cornfield and proclaimed him their king - King Skjold.
King Skjold grew big and strong. He gathered the people, expanded the kingdom to all of Zealand and became the ancestor of legendary kings such as Halfdan and Frode, Roar and Helge, Rolf Krake and Harald Hildetand. When King Skjold died, he was laid on his ship - and the wind carried him out across the fjord again.
The old legends about the shield cubs originate from the Icelandic sagas and Saxo. Perhaps the legendary kings really lived here in the distant past – perhaps they are a myth – but excavations of a number of impressive royal halls in Gl. Camps bear witness to the existence of a magnate's empire in the area in the Iron Age and the Viking Age.
