Former St. Scholastica faculty member Dr. Nicholas Susi returns to Duluth from South Carolina for a guest artist recital. This program features works by two iconic composers that curiously utilize only the left hand of the pianist. In Scriabin’s case, the Two Pieces, op. 9 came from necessity in a period in which the composer had injured his right hand while practicing. In Brahms’s case, he transcribes one of the best-known violin pieces of J.S. Bach as a study for the left hand in an act of homage. Closing the program is a reunification of the pianists’ hands; Debussy’s second book of preludes is a 40-minute set that takes the listener on an evocative journey across foreign landscapes, magical tales, and the distant past.
