About this Event
Handpan Sound Journey with Bobby Frank
Bobby Frank is a Nashville-based handpan artist, drummer, and percussionist. He performs and records extensively with a variety of musicians and bands, both on the handpan and drumset. Bobby’s passion is improvisational music – everything from John Coltrane to the Grateful Dead. It’s the musical conversations that occur on stage that inspire him most.
“The handpan is a multidimensional instrument. It allows me to play rhythm, harmony and melody at the same time so I’m basically accompanying myself. Each handpan I play is an endlessly revealing instrument. They’re all filled with magical overtones and a sensitivity that voices my emotions and speaks my authentic self.
The sound journeys I lead are entirely improvisational. They usually begin with a musical theme or rhythm that sets an initial course for the journey. As patterns evolve, new directions emerge, new sounds introduce themselves, and the sounds in the space begin to integrate seamlessly. Each sound journey is a unique musical exploration lasting 45 minutes to an hour.
Like the handpan itself, the experience is multidimensional. As my thoughts and feelings flow through the instrument, the music slows and accelerates. It floats between calm and intense, always with a soothing, pleasing sound that inspires highly engaged relaxation.”
