The Chantry Singers - Guildford and Handel’s MessiahGeorge Frederick Handel was born in Halle in 1685 and moved to London in 1712 where he was naturalised in 1727. He was a prolific composer, composing 42 operas, 24 oratorios, more than 120 cantatas, trios and duets, numerous arias, odes and serenatas, solo and trio sonatas, 18 concerti grossi, and 12 organ concertos. By far his most famous work is the oratorio Messiah with its "Hallelujah" chorus, which is among the most popular works in choral music. The Chantry Singers - Guildford are singing this masterpiece on November 29th at St Nicolas Church, Bury Street. For the audience this will be a very different experience from that provided by a full orchestra and large choir. As a chamber choir we muster roughly the same forces as Handel had at the first performance in Dublin on April 13 1742 – then he had 32 men and boy singers from the two Dublin cathedral choirs in Dublin, two female soloists, organ and small orchestra.
For the chance to experience a new (well new in 1742!) way of enjoying this choral masterpiece please call the number on the poster below or clink on the link below. Tickets are £18 for adults and £2 for 16 and under.
