Course Description: This one-day, interactive course will focus on the evaluation and treatment of impairments of the hand, wrist, and elbow in the physical therapy and occupational therapy setting. The purpose of this course will be to advance the understanding of current research in evaluation and treatment of common conditions encountered in the clinic for physical therapy and occupational therapy. The course will focus on the most common causes of hand, wrist, and elbow pain, dysfunction, and impaired functional use including but not limited to: carpal tunnel, osteoarthritis, trigger finger, duputryen’s, Dequervains, fractures, tendon ruptures, medial elbow pain and lateral elbow pain. The class will also connect cervical pathology and a source of distal hand and wrist pain. A combination of interactive lecture, small group case study, and lab skills will ultimately lead to well informed care and enhanced clinical patient outcomes. Lectures will include review of relevant anatomy, physiology, differential diagnosis, clinical practice patterns, discussion of clinical decision making, and real-world case examples. Lab will center around small group case study with demonstration of appropriate clinical exams, screening techniques, treatment techniques, exercise progression, hands-on cuing and motor learning techniques, and patient education strategies as substantiated in current literature with instructor feedback.

  1. Design an evidence-based plan of care including functional goals based on a systematic interview and examination of patient, prognosis, deficits in function and length of care given a case scenario of a patient with a common wrist/hand injury discussed.
  2. Describe appropriate interventions to address ROM and/or strength given a case scenario.
  3. Identify 3 red flags necessitating referral to another healthcare provider given a case scenario.
  4. Verbalize the relationship between cervical spine to wrist/hand musculature and nerve pathways during assessment as they relate to upper extremity activities of daily living and hand function.
  5. Utilize examination findings in assessment of wrist/hand to identify 3 appropriate treatment interventions for a specific case diagnosis.
  6. Describe the anatomic and physiologic changes associated with common wrist/hand injuries including post-surgical intervention and how it relates to injury risk, red-flags, comorbidities/ disease risk in relation to OT evaluation and intervention

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Physical Therapy Assistants: By completion of the course, Physical Therapists Assistants will be able to discuss and interpret current evidence related to assessment, clinical decision-making and treatment of the physiologic components related to the elbow, wrist, and hand.

  1. Articulate understanding of an evidence-based plan of care including functional goals based on a systematic interview and examination of patient, prognosis, deficits in function and length of care given a case scenario of a patient with a common wrist/hand injury discussed.
