ABOUT THE SHOW:
Hand to God is a dark comedy set in a Texas church basement where a puppet ministry takes a twisted turn. Jason, a shy teenager, finds himself at war with his puppet, Tyrone, who begins to take on a life of its own—cursing, misbehaving, and challenging everything Jason holds dear. As Jason battles his inner demons, he navigates through a tumultuous relationship with his mother and the complications of adolescence.
Please note that Hand to God contains mature content, including explicit language, sexual content, dark humor, and depictions of violence. The story explores sensitive themes such as grief, mental health, and religious hypocrisy, with some scenes involving intense emotional and physical moments. Actors should be comfortable engaging with this material in a bold, comedic, and sometimes provocative manner.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
We are seeking a diverse group of performers, ages 18+. All ethnicities, gender identities, and body types are encouraged to audition. All roles available.
HOW TO PREPARE:
Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. No prepared monologue required.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
Jason/Tyrone (Male, 18-30)
A shy and awkward teen trying to navigate grief, self-identity, and troubled relationships, especially with his overbearing mother. Jason struggles with his dark alter ego, Tyrone, and must confront his inner turmoil. Tyrone is Jason's puppet. He is crude, rebellious, and unfiltered, embodying Jason’s darker side. Strong emotional range, physicality, and comedic timing required.
Margery (Female, 30s-50s)
Jason’s mother, a deeply religious woman running a puppet ministry. Margery is struggling with her own grief and unresolved desires, leading to her inappropriate relationship with Pastor Greg. Must bring emotional depth, vulnerability, and a strong sense of comedy to the role.
Pastor Greg (Male, 30-50)
The well-meaning but ineffective pastor of the church. Pastor Greg is ill-prepared for the emotional turbulence around him and is both awkward and morally ambiguous. Requires a balance of humor and sincerity.
Jessica (Female, 18-30)
A fellow high school student who is confident, assertive, and a bit flirtatious. Jessica represents the teenage world of rebellion and experimentation, and becomes a love interest for both Timmy and Jason. She is bold, quick-witted, and often the catalyst for action, adding both humor and drama to the story. Strong comedic timing and ability to navigate emotional complexity needed.
Timmy (Male, 18-30)
Timmy is a troubled teen. He is a bully. He believes he is the Alpha male. However, he is so much more. His mom is an alcoholic and he’s just trying to survive in the only way that he knows how. He believes he truly loves Margery, Jason’s mom, and will do whatever he can to prove his love for her.
