About this Event
This workshop is an exciting opportunity to discover the old technique of lost wax casting in order to create beautiful bespoke pieces such as rings, pendants or any other small jewellery object. As a professional maker, I will guide you through the process so you can relax, get creative and enjoy the experience.
During the session, you will be carving your very own unique piece using jewellers’ wax, with a selection of specialised tools. I will talk you through the lost wax casting process, the qualities of different forms of wax, how to use the wax carving tools, and what can be achieved with the techniques specific to this form of jewellery making.
You will learn how to cut, carve and manipulate wax to realise your designs just the way you want them. Once you have finished carving, you will then be shown how to prepare the item for casting, so it is ready to be reproduced in gold, silver or another metal of your choice.
Please note, as this is a one day course, we will only be working in wax. The cast itself is done later. I am happy to advise on the best possible options for metals, and corresponding costs, as well as recommend the caster.
Creating sustainable jewellery is at the heart of my practice and I will only recommend casters who work with recycled, ethical gold and silver. (To give an idea, casting and finishing of a ring in sterling silver is around £20, in 9ct Yellow Gold around £150 plus postage, depending on the size and weight of your item.)
No previous jewellery-making experience is required. This workshop is offered as a small group workshop to allow plenty of one-on-one attention
What’s included
All materials are included in the cost of the workshop, from tools to wax. I will also provide full information on where to buy tools and equipment if you find you love the process so much you would like to set up your own jewellery-making studio at home.
Please note any costs related to casting afterwards, including metals and precious stones, are not included.
I also take pictures during the workshop that I’m happy to send to you afterwards, for you to keep as a memory of the day. If you do not wish to be photographed, I will of course respect that too.
