Shakespeare’s iconic tragedy of murder, obsession and lost love is brought to life by the young people of 22 schools in Kent.‘Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.’
On a bitter cold night, a ghostly figure appears with a message. Hamlet, a young prince, is called upon by the ghost of his murdered father, to avenge his death. Plunged into turmoil, Hamlet embarks on a journey into the depths of revenge; constantly debating the uncertainty of life, morality and mortality, and ultimately instigating a catalogue of deadly events.
This abridged production of Hamlet is the culmination of a year-long project with schools from across Kent to bring Shakespeare from the page to the stage. With training from the Royal Shakespeare Company in partnership with The Marlowe these schools deeply embed RSC rehearsal room techniques into their classrooms allowing young people to investigate Shakespeare’s plays from a whole new perspective.
With directors and theatre makers from The Marlowe working collaboratively with these schools, this production represents young people’s views of one of Shakespeare’s best-known stories.
