About Joe Beard
Rochester Music Hall of Famer Joe Beard is one of the world’s premier bluesmen. Still performing at the age of 87, he is both a link to the blues’ past and an usher for its future.
Born in Mississippi, Beard migrated north to Rochester in the 1950s where he befriended fellow Missippian Son House, who just happened to be his neighbor. The two went on to perform together on many occassions. House was a mentor to both Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson, making Beard one of the last living connections to an indispensable part of the blues’ development. He has performed with the likes of B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, and Ronnie Earl just to name a few.
About Ed Croft (MC)
Ed Croft is a sought after musician and educator in WNY. He is a multi award winning bassist, most recently being named JazzBuffalo’s Best Acoustic and Best Electric Bassist in the 2024 Poll. He teaches at both SUNY Fredonia and SUNY Niagara. As a performer, his resume includes work with Mike Stern, Jimmy Heath, The Four Freshmen, and Tia Brazda, amongst countless others.
This series aims to frame the work of the musicians presented in a greater cultural context, giving audience members a chance not only to hear the songs, but the stories of these legendary artists
