From Jenny at UP Foster Closet:
Overview of us:
We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit, tax-exempt organization driven by the conviction that 'ALL CHILDREN ARE OUR CHILDREN.' We are an all-donation and volunteer-run organization. Our primary goal is to ensure that children navigating the challenging transition into foster care or alternative care arrangements have support during one of the most difficult periods of their lives. These transitions are often sudden and traumatic, with children frequently arriving with little more than the clothes on their backs. Our organization helps alleviate the sudden financial stress this can present to foster families by providing children with new and like-new clothing, bed frames, new mattresses, pillows, bedding, new hygiene items, new car seats, and new shoes. This is all provided completely FREE OF CHARGE. This allows the foster families to prioritize the child's emotional needs rather than shopping. Background
The UP Foster Closet of Delta County originally started under The Foster Closet of Michigan. In 2018, when Jenny & Heather took it over the organization, we decided to break away from the parent/umbrella organization. We officially became our own 501(c)3 non-profit organization, I believe, in June of 2018. This allowed us to bank locally, fundraise locally, and to make our own rules haha. At this same time, there was a branch in Marquette County and one that was newly forming in Dickinson County. They also opted to leave the parent organization to form their own, independent 501(c)3s. Since that time, we have assisted two other UP Foster Closets to open - Marinette/Menominee and Iron County. While we all operate independently, we work together regularly to ensure needs are being met not only in our respective counties, but surrounding counties. On average we serve 15-20 kids a month. Our busiest month we've had was August of 2024, where we served 60 children. As of 08/07/25, we are at 17, so we are on target to either meet or surpass that number.
