Hailu Mergia and his band the Walias dominated Ethiopia's nightclub scene against a backdrop of civil war and revolution in the 1970s. Blending earthy funk with traditional Ethiopian melodies, Mergia is one of the most beloved and successful musical acts in the country's history.
Since returning to the stage a decade ago, Hailu has re-emerged as an in-demand artist on the global circuit. Helming a trio with a badass rhythm section performing cuts from his classic albums, as well as music from his critically acclaimed recent releases, the band have performed all over the world including stops at the Montreal Jazz Festival, the Kennedy Center, and Radio City Music Hall - receiving stellar reviews for their ecstatic, sweat soaked, high energy performances.
