HAIKU MILIEU
⭐ Jenny Bienemann has created an enterprise that includes books, live music, video, and more, all inspired by an 800-year old poetic form: Haiku.
With a passion for finding the extraordinary in the everyday, Jenny Bienemann is an award-winning singer and songwriter with six albums that receive international airplay and music featured in TV, film, and theatre. She grew up in the Western Suburbs, performing at Riverfront Playhouse in downtown Aurora.
Jenny began taking photos and writing haiku on a lark, as a way to stay creative in between writing songs.
What started as daily social media posts grew into three critically acclaimed books, a weekly Haiku Milieu newsletter, and the Haiku Milieu Concert series, at which artists write and perform a song inspired by one of Jenny’s haiku poems, backed by a superb band. Fostering creativity and collaboration, these concerts have presented more than 325 songs from 125 artists representing 15 states.
Jenny serves as host for the evening. She introduces each performer and reads the haiku that sparked the song before it is performed for the first time ever. The “Haiku Your Milieu” portion of the evening features haiku written by community members, thinning the veil between artist and audience.
The Haiku Milieu Concerts, like Haiku Milieu itself, is a celebration of the extraordinary in the every day: the incredible musicians, songwriters and artists walking among us, hidden in plain sight.
