Deploying AI in Organizations & Society
HAI Seminar with Angela Aristidou
Recent advances in artificial intelligence have leaped from the confines of computer labs into our vibrant social, business, and organizational fabric. Leaders and members of established organizations—from governments to hospitals and nonprofits—are zealously exploring ways to harness these powerful tools to enhance efficiency, amplify impact, and ignite innovation.
AI’s deployment in organizational settings, however, can spark transformations beyond the individual organizations and the communities they serve. Applying these tools in the real world not only presents formidable challenges that transcend traditional boundaries across organizations, but also across industries and even sectors (public, private, and nonprofit). Such challenges necessitate new or different ways of partnering across organizations, industries, and sectors. What’s more, AI-driven partnerships may deliver more value than any single industry or sector could achieve alone, while benefiting a larger swath of society than the local communities served by individual organizations.
This presentation delves into empirical research on four case studies of real-world, AI-driven, cross-sector partnerships. These longitudinal studies leverage qualitative and quantitative methods to examine the deployment of AI “in the wild,” in nonprofit and humanitarian aid initiatives, and through data trusts, multi-sided platforms, and open-source platforms in health. Aristidou’s research demonstrates how AI-driven cross-sector partnerships reshape established partnership paradigms and collaboration models and generate new governance mechanisms and emerging business models.
