In celebration of International Women's Day Traces of Slavery Haarlem is organising a special thematic walking tour. This guided tour highlights the stories of different women in colonial times: women who were victims of slavery and women who benefited from this practice.
Although the role of men is often emphasised history shows that women from all classes of society played an important role in upholding the colonial system. Learn about the various perspectives and experiences of women who are inextricably linked to Haarlem's history and left their mark on the city. En route there is plenty of opportunity for dialogue. Together you will discover a different side of the city.
The tour lasts about 1.5 hours and ends at the starting point. The walking tour is suitable for wheelchair users. Dogs are welcome as long as they are kept on a short leash and do not disturb the tour.
In all the above cases we kindly ask you to inform us in advance to ensure the tour is as informative and pleasant as possible for all participants.
Parking is available in the nearby car park De Appelaar at an hourly rate of €4.20. The nearest bus stop is Centrum/Verwulft a 5-minute walk from the starting point on the Grote Markt. From Haarlem train station the walk is about 15 minutes.
Pre-registration and payment is required which can be done on our website. Cancellation should be made 48 hours before the event for a full refund. You will always get a refund if the tour guide cancels.
