This 4.5 hour in depth tour led by Joseph Whitehorne, narrator of The Battle of Cedar Creek documentary film and developer of the Self-Guided Tour Book of the Cedar Creek Battlefield, will explore multiple stops that give an overview of the landscape and scope of the Battle of Cedar Creek. Meet your guide!
Joseph W. A. Whitehorne is a retired United States Army officer who served as a staff historian in the United States and Europe. His last assignment was on the staff of the Secretary of the Army. His duties included primary research, battlefield interpretation, archives development, and support to archaeological and casualty recovery operations. One of his last military projects was historian to the Snake Hill excavation at Fort Erie, Ontario - a War of 1812 site.
After retiring from the Army in 1989, he was a professor of history at Lord Fairfax Community College until retiring again in 2010. He continues to be a historical consultant to the Department of Anthropology and Sociology at James Madison University. In the latter capacity, he has written the history portions of 25 major reports on Civil War military sites in the Shenandoah Valley. He is the author, co-author, or contributor to 18 books and over 30 articles, many of which deal with War of 1812 and Civil War topics.
A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, he holds a masters degree from Pennsylvania State University, doctorate from George Mason University and an honorary doctorate from Shenandoah University.
Whitehorne is a past president of the Cedar Creek Battlefield Foundation and a past president of the Warren County (VA) Historical Society. He currently is president of the Clermont Foundation (Berryville, Virginia). In addition, he has served on several Federal and state commissions dealing with the Civil War preservation and commemoration in the Shenandoah Valley.
