Join Polk's Nature Discovery Center as we participate in the City Nature Challenge and contribute to citizen science!
What is the City Nature Challenge?
The City Nature Challenge is an international effort for people to find and document plants and wildlife in cities across the globe. It’s a bioblitz-style competition where cities are in a friendly contest with each other to see who can make the most observations of nature, who can find the most species, and who can engage the most people. - citynaturechallenge.org
Prior to the two-mile Alligator Alley loop hike, we will meet in the Polk's Nature Discovery Center Workshop for a brief introduction to iNaturalist and Seek (apps/tools that will help us engage in citizen science). From there, the guided hike will follow the trail down Shady Oak, Alligator Alley, and take Wading Bird Way back to the center. Everyone is welcome to stay with the group or walk at their own pace.
Date & Time : Saturday, April 27th, 9:00am
Location: Those planning to participate with the group should meet at the Discovery Center Workshop Building at 9:00am and expect to walk over two-miles round-trip. (Please see maps below for details)
Tickets & Sign-Ups: Tickets are not required to participate, but help us gauge how many participants to expect
Helpful tips for those planning to attend:
- Dress to be outdoors and appropriate for current weather conditions.
- Close-toed shoes are recomended.
- Make sure to apply sunscreen and bug spray.
- Bring a refillable water bottle.
- Use the restroom before starting out on the trail.
- Please remember that pets are not allowed on the property.
