Guerrilla Capacity and Performance: From Counters to Containers and Clouds
Capacity planning and performance analysis (CaP) go together hand-in-glove and that also makes the whole subject a rather complicated discipline: lots of different metrics, lots of different concepts, lots of different tools, and so on.
This extremely popular course presents guerrilla-style tactics for doing performance analysis, system sizing, and capacity planning in today's challenging business environment where time-to-market is everything, and management is impatient for results. In such an environment, CaP is often dropped in favor of just getting the project completed on schedule—even if performance sucks! Everyone can do better than that.
Conventional CaP techniques are too cumbersome and time consuming to address these immediate needs. Guerrilla Capacity and Performance (GCAP) presents a more tactical approach to meet today's demanding capacity challenges; including lift-and-shift to the cloud.
Some course highlights:
- All computer systems can be understood as a network of buffers or queues
- The language of queues is the proper basis for all performance & capacity analysis
- There are only THREE performance metrics: all others are derived
- How to quantify application scalability with the Universal Scalability Law (USL)
- The virtualization spectrum from hyperthreads to hyperservices
- Capacity planning for remote cloud services
More details are provided in the extended course outline.

The course material is the equivalent of 5 full days of training. That translates to 40 hours of online time. Past experience shows that the most comfortable delievery is nominally 4 hour-hour sessions per day spread over 2 weeks (10 business days). The actual session periods can be reorganized by mutual consent among the participants once we convene online.
The instructor delivers from a studio with a whiteboard that facilitates extemporaneous explanations as well as addressing interactive questions from students. All other materials, such as course notes, program codes and examples, are delivered electronically prior to the start of the online class.
We look forward to meeting you (virtually).
