La Guelaguetza is one of the most important celebrations of Oaxaca, a state that is located in the south of Mexico, and borders Veracruz and Puebla.In New Brunswick NJ all start with a parade from the Mexican Consulate @ 390 George St at 10:00 AM to the Boyd Park where the Guelaguetza will take place.
What is La Guelaguetza?
Guelaguetza means ‘offering’, it comes from the word ‘guendalezaa’, representing the act of giving, it is also called locally as the ‘Monday party of the hill’.
The origin of this beautiful tradition dates back to pre-Hispanic times, being a ritual to the gods, which is why they have always been important dates for Oaxaca people. Over the years the celebration has evolved, becoming the party that is known today.
Everything begins a week before July 16, with the “convite”, a great parade, where the “Chinas Oaxaqueñas” make their stellar appearance, women of the city who go with baskets of flowers, and go in the company of each of the seven regions that participate; Los Valles Centrales, La Sierra Juárez, La Cañada, Tuxtepec, La Mixteca, Istmo de Tehuantepec and La Costa, playing music from their region. You are invited to attend with friends and family.
