Learn how to grow your own food by understanding the biological relationships needed to produce healthy nutrient dense plants. By the end of this workshop you will know how to prepare your garden beds, grow from seed, transplant your seedling and feed you plants for a successful harvest.This workshop will be held over two SUNDAY MORNINGS. This is a hands on workshop where we will be setting up and planting garden beds. We would like to thank the Shire of Mundaring and Department of Communities for sponsoring the workshop.
Sunday 27th April
• How to choose the right place to set up your food garden
• What are the differences between in ground, raised beds and planting in pots
• When your garden bed requires shade cloth
• How to create an environment for beneficial microbes and soil life
• How plant succession is important to maintain healthy soils
• Different types of mulch for plants and trees
• What do to if your soil become hydrophobic (water repellent)
Sunday 4th May
• The benefits of combining annual and perennial plants
• The significance of companion planting
• Plant nutrition requirements from seed to mature plant
• How to feed you growing plants
• How to harvest all parts of your plant
• Seeds: how to collect, store and propagate
The workshop is delivered in a hands on format so please bring gardening gloves, closed shoes, rain jackets or umbrella (if needed), water bottle and a hat (if needed). Time for knowledge sharing will be available after each workshop – feel free to bring snacks to share.
Numbers are limited to 15 people. Parents are welcome to bring along children for free. The content of this workshop is recommended for children 10+
Workshop Exchange is $40 and children are free (all proceeds go the Glen Forest Community Garden).
