About this Event
Join us on Thu Jul 18, 2024 at 5:30 PM at The Black Arts Centre for the opening of the Growing Roots Exhibition, which sheds light on the housing challenges faced by Government-Assisted Refugees and refugee claimants in Surrey. Over one year, City in Colour Cooperative partnered with DIVERSEcity Community Resource Society to document the housing experiences of Government-Assisted Refugees (GARs) and refugee claimants, tracing their journeys from arrival in Canada to their current homes. During this time, we gathered stories from four refugee communities: Spanish-speaking refugee claimants from Latin America, and GARs from Dari, Swahili, and Arabic-speaking communities. The project's main goals are to identify systemic barriers preventing adequate, affordable, long-term housing for GARs and refugee claimants in Surrey and to raise awareness about the housing situation of refugees in the Lower Mainland.
This exhibition aims to raise awareness about the housing situation of refugees in Surrey and the Lower Mainland. While this exhibition is open to the general public, we particularly want to reach decision-makers, planners, government workers, funders, developers, the settlement sector, and academics. By spreading this knowledge widely, we hope to start crafting solutions together.
