Nationally renowned tomato expert Craig LeHoullier will present "Growing Epic Tomatoes" as we kick off the 2026 Extension Master Gardener Gardening Education Series. Admission is free and the public is welcome!Known across the country as "Mr. Tomato," LeHoullier is the author of the award-winning book "Epic Tomatoes". He'll take the audience through is 40-year journey with the world's most popular garden vegetable, blending history and storytelling with practical, local advice on which varieties thrive specifically in our Western North Carolina climate.
The session will cover the tomato life cycle, culture, seed starting and seed saving, cultural methods and best practices, and troubleshooting common pests and diseases. Bring your curiosity and your questions!
Craig LeHoullier lives and gardens in Hendersonville, NC. His love of heirloom tomatoes began with his joining the Seed Savers Exchange, an organization for which he continues to serve as adviser for tomatoes, in 1986. He is responsible for naming and popularizing many well-known tomatoes, such as Cherokee Purple, Lillian’s Yellow Heirloom and Lucky Cross. In 2005 he added amateur tomato breeding to his garden resume, and continues to co-lead the Dwarf Tomato Breeding project, responsible for creating 145 (and counting) new compact growing varieties for space-challenged gardeners.
