Growers' Workshop: Polytunnels and Greenhouses

If you want to grow crops like tomatoes and chillies, that need more warmth that you usually get in a Scottish summer, or start plants off early in spring and keep them going over the winter, they need a protected environment. A polytunnel or greenhouse adds a whole new dimension of possibilities to growing – and some additional challenges.
In this workshop we will look at:
- The advantages of greenhouses and polytunnels, indoor growing, and other sorts of protected cropping like cloches, cold frames and fleece row covers.
- Choosing a site for a polytunnel
- Buying and setting up a polytunnel
- Maintenance and repairs
- Ventilation and heat
- Water
- Layout, soil and container growing
- What can be grown in a polytunnel
This is part of a series of free training workshops we'll be running throughout the year for anyone who wants to learn how to grow organic fruit and veg. It's aimed at beginners, though if you are a more experienced grower, you're very welcome to come along and share your knowledge.
We’ll meet in the White House Garden at 11am.
Anyone is welcome to join the workshop. Please let me know if you’re planning to come, so I have an idea of likely number of participants.
