There will be a dance call for the audition. Come prepared to dance. Some roles require character-type dancing and comedic physicality, so singers who move well are encouraged to audition.
SYNOPSIS:
Groundhog Day: The Musical follows cynical TV weatherman Phil Connors, sent to cover Punxsutawney’s quirky Groundhog Day—only to wake up trapped reliving February 2nd again…and again..and again. At first, he indulges every impulse; then the emptiness hits. With the earnest Rita Hanson providing a moral compass, Phil learns to listen, help his neighbors, and choose love over ego.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
PHIL CONNORS: Lead; baritone/tenor (A2–A4; optional Bb4); 30s–40s - Acerbic, charming, deeply flawed - but becomes genuinely compassionate. Heavy singing/scene work; strong comedy and fast patter; carries the arc. Confident mover; brief dance.
RITA HANSON: Lead; mezzo with mix (G3–E5); late 20s–30s - Smart associate producer; grounded, romantic but no pushover. Warm belt/mix, legit top. Movement: light dance. Chemistry with Phil is key.
LARRY: Featured; baritenor (A2–G4); 30s–40s - Cameraman with deadpan wit and big heart. Comic timing; some singing/ensembles. Minimal movement.
NED RYERSON / HEALER: Featured; tenor (B2–A4); 30s–50s - Over-friendly insurance salesman; also doubles as a new-age healer in “Stuck.” Broad comedic chops; quick-change ability. Funny, character dance.
BUSTER (Groundhog Day MC): Featured; baritone (A2–F4); 40s–60s - Folksy master of ceremonies/Elder. Ringmaster energy; clear diction for ceremonial bits.
NANCY TAYLOR: Featured; mezzo/soprano (A3–E5); 20s–30s - Magnetic small-town beauty; delivers Act II opener “Playing Nancy.” Needs charm, vulnerability, and a pop-theatre sound. Light dance.
MRS. LANCASTER / ENSEMBLE: Featured; mezzo/alto (G3–C5); 50s–70s - B&B host—sweet, slightly offbeat; comic timing. Sings ensemble.
GUS: Featured; baritone (A2–E4); 30s–50s - One of Phil’s bar buddies in “Nobody Cares.” Earthy vocals; comic chemistry with Ralph.
RALPH / BARTENDER BILLY: Featured; tenor/baritenor (A2–G4); 20s–40s - Gus’s partner-in-crime; also plays the bartender. Strong comic chops; ensemble vocals.
ENSEMBLE TRACKS (6–10+) — Townspeople, Elders, Diner staff, Festival crowd, Ceremony team, “Stuck” experts, etc.
This is a Pop-rock ensemble; strong blend & quick part learning. Movement ranges from stylized traffic to festive crowd dance; a few performers should be comfortable with lifts/basic partnering.
THE ROLES BELOW WILL BE CHOSEN FROM THE ENSEMBLE.
DEBBIE: Featured; mezzo (A3–D5); 20s–30s - Engaged (and later newlywed) townsperson; sweet, sincere.
FRED: Featured; tenor (B2–G4); 20s–30s - Debbie’s fiancé/husband; affable.
SHERIFF / PRIEST: Featured; baritone (A2–E4); 30s–60s - Authoritative but kind; doubles as Priest in “Stuck.”
DEPUTY / AA PERSON: Featured; any vocal (A2–E4 approx.); 20s–50s - Comic foil; pops in the car-chase scene; doubles in “Stuck.”
MRS. CLEVELAND / PIANO TEACHER / SCIENTOLOGIST: Featured; mezzo (G3–D5); 40s–60s - Multiple comic cameos; quick-change reliability.
MR. CLEVELAND / ELDER / OLD JENSON: Featured; baritone (A2–E4); 40s–70s Townie cameos including the beggar Phil later helps.
DORIS (Waitress) / ENSEMBLE: Featured; mezzo (A3–C5); 20s–50s - Warm presence; anchors diner scenes.
JOËLLE / NURSE / ENSEMBLE: Featured; any vocal; 20s–40s - Quick tracks through “Stuck” and hospital beats.
CHUBBY MAN / PRIEST / ELDER: Featured; any vocal; 20s–50s - Early-morning hallway gag and festival presence; comic timing.
STORM CHASERS (2): Featured cameos / Ensemble; any vocal - High-energy bit roles; quick in/out.
