About this Event
“The truth is rarely pure and never simple.” – Oscar Wilde
Cambrian Players is pleased to present Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde by Moises Kaufman and directed by Andrew Paulsen as the first Green Room show of 2026! Our Green Room shows are presented as staged readings, bringing a unique authenticity as our actors take to the stage with scripts in hand. With only three or four rehearsals prior to hitting the stage, these shows deliver a spontaneous experience for both the performers and the audience.
In this stunning work of theatre, Moises Kaufman turns the trials of Oscar Wilde into a riveting human and intellectual drama in the Lambda Literary Award-winning Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde.
In April 1895, Oscar Wilde brought a libel suit against the Marquess of Queensberry, the father of his youthful lover, who had publicly maligned him as a sodomite. In doing so, England's reigning man of letters set in motion a series of events that would culminate in his ruin and imprisonment. For within a year, the bewildered Wilde himself was on trial for acts of "gross indecency" and, implicitly, for a vision of art that outraged the accepted standards of Victorian behaviour and morals.
Expertly interweaving courtroom testimony with excerpts from Wilde's writings and the words of his contemporaries, Gross Indecency unveils its subject in all his genius and human frailty, his age in all its complacency and repression.
Don’t miss this absolutely gripping, unforgettable, compelling exploration of history and chilling, shattering, yet delightfully exuberant human drama.
This staged play reading will feature a large fully-local cast of incredible performers!
