Join us at Angel Street (outside Kommune) for the celebration of the completion of the Grey to Green 2 Works at the Opening Ceremony on Saturday 16th July 2022, which celebrates and explores Sheffield’s history of supporting the Anti-Apartheid Movement. Grey to Green is Sheffield City Council’s transformational active travel, environmental and regeneration strategy, around the Castlegate area of Sheffield City Centre.
Angel St was the iconic site where a plaque was laid in 1985, in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Sharpeville Massacre, and Sheffield’s leading role in the Anti-Apartheid Movement
A new plaque will be rededicated to this cause and unveiled on 16th July, as part of the Opening Ceremony. There will also be live music by Khula Arts, a celebration of the beautiful sound of the South African Zulu, Ndebele and Xhosa traditional music, plus dance and drumming of the Nguni people of Southern Africa.
11:30am - 12.15pm – Music by Khula Arts
12:15 – 12.45pm - Speeches by dignitaries Paul Blomfield MP, Olivier Tsemo (CEO, SADACCA), Cllr Terry Fox (Leader, SCC) and Richard Caborn, unveiling of new plaque and performance of the African National Anthem by Khula Arts
12.45 – 1.15pm - Live performance by Khula Arts
1.15pm - Opening of the exhibition “Sheffield and the Anti-Apartheid Movement (AMM)” in Kommune, free to everyone. Until end July
Also in July, The Kurious World Festival taking place in Kommune will bring experiences of food, music and cinema from around the world, as well put on a range of workshops to spark curiosity! To find out more, please visit:
