About this Event
The Circle
The Greenway Court Theater invites you to The World Premiere of The Circle, a tragicomic play exploring three generations worth of intergenerational and intercultural conflict, rooted in humor, healing, and hope. The play is directed by San Diego Rep cofounder, D.W. Jacobs starring René Rivera, Alma Martinez and Lakin Valdez of Teatro Campesino with original music by EMMY and Oscar nominated and Grammy Award winner Germaine Franco.
The Circle explores 3 generations of traumas over one intense weekend in 2016. The Texas heat threatens to boil over as Jose Medina, tries to finally make a lifetime of mistakes right with his mother, Eva before she dies.
Things take a wild turn when he accidentally “kidnaps” a drunken Trump supporter at the deadly Dallas protest against police brutality. Things turn from bad to worse when his younger brother, Ronnie, an out of work actor, descends from LA unannounced after years of estrangement. With him is his 12-year-old daughter, very pregnant girlfriend, and her newly widowed mother who is insisting they get married before Eva passes.
The chaos in Medina home reflects the absurd brutality of the 2016 election season and the pain pouring into streets across the country. The Medinas learn the Circle is much more than a name for their neighborhood in South San Antonio. The Circle is a place where they will either heal themselves or tear each other apart.
“I loved this play. It moved like a myth—uncovering our shared humanity and opening a door to a gentle rebirth.”
