🌟 The Greensand Way 2025 🌟Overview:
The Greensand Way is a scenic 108-mile (174 km) long-distance trail stretching from Haslemere in Surrey to Hamstreet in Kent, following the Greensand Ridge.
We will enjoy panoramic views, explore picturesque villages, and pass through historic sites such as Knole Park and Leeds Castle. The route includes several areas of outstanding natural beauty and seven trig points to bag along the way.
With varied landscapes, from ancient woodlands, rolling hills, open fields, villages and riversides , it’s a great mini challenge to try and complete over the course of 2025. Y
ou will experience the beauty of Surrey and Kent across different seasons as we complete the trail with 1 date per month.
The Greensand Way is named after the Greensand Ridge, a long, narrow band of sandstone that runs through parts of Surrey and Kent. This sandstone is rich in the mineral glauconite, which gives it a distinctive greenish hue, hence the name “Greensand.”
There is an alternative option to complete the trail and receive a medal. This will give you two free walks.

Stage 3:
Starting in Shamley Green, the Greensand Way leads us out of the picturesque village, passing through rolling fields and woodlands.
The path soon takes us up onto Winterfold Hill, one of the highest points on the trail, where we will be rewarded with panoramic views across the Surrey Hills.
On a clear day, the sight stretches as far as the South Downs and the distant ridge of Leith Hill.
As we descend from Winterfold, the trail winds through Hurt Wood, a large expanse of ancient woodland filled with oak, birch, and pine trees.
This is a peaceful section, where we might spot wildlife such as deer or birds of prey circling overhead. T
he dense woodland gives way to open heathland as we approach Pitch Hill, another high point on the trail with breathtaking views over the surrounding countryside.
After a steep descent, the Greensand Way meanders through quiet lanes and small villages, eventually leading to the impressive Leith Hill, the highest point in Southeast England.
There will be time to climb the tower at the top (if open – small fee required) for even better views, spanning from London to the south coast.
Leaving Leith Hill, the route descends into more open farmland and fields, passing by traditional Surrey farms and rural cottages.
The trail winds gently through the valley landscape before reaching the quaint village of Westcott, nestled at the foot of the North Downs where we complete stage 3.
This is a longer day with some steep inclines but the views from the Surrey hills are well worth it.
